While the transparent wear layer handles physical abrasion, the top UV coating is the invisible shield that protects against chemical attacks and staining.
How UV Coating Creates a Stain Barrier
During manufacturing, a specialized polyurethane coating is applied to the surface of the SPC plank and then cured using high-intensity ultra-violet light.
This process creates a dense, non-porous top layer.
This coating seals the micro-pores of the vinyl wear layer underneath. By eliminating these microscopic voids, it prevents liquid contaminants from penetrating the surface and permanently bonding with the material.
Instead, substances like oil, ink, or wine remain on the surface, allowing maintenance crews to easily wipe them away without leaving a trace.
Resistance to Fading from Sunlight
A significant secondary benefit of high-quality UV coating is fade resistance.
Intense direct sunlight through large windows or glass doors can degrade the decorative print film over time, causing it to turn yellow or lose color vibrancy.
The UV inhibitors integrated into our coating formula act like a high-factor sunscreen for the floor.
They absorb and neutralize harmful ultraviolet rays, preserving the rich color and clarity of the wood or stone grain pattern for decades, even in brightly lit environments.
Enhanced Scratch and Scuff Resistance
Modern UV coating technology often incorporates ceramic beads or other microscopic hard particles. This reinforces the surface toughness.
This added reinforcement helps to repel minor surface scratches and scuff marks from shoe heels or furniture legs.
By maintaining surface smoothness, it prevents dirt from getting trapped in micro-scratches, which is the primary cause of a floor looking dull and dirty over time.
Technical Performance Benchmarks
For technical project submittals, our SPC flooring meets the following industry benchmarks regarding surface protection:
Stain Resistance (ISO 26987): Passed (Rated 5, which means zero visible changes after exposure to common household and commercial chemicals like acetone, coffee, and sodium hydroxide).
Color Fastness to Light (ISO 105-B02): Rated 6 or higher on the blue wool scale (Indicates excellent resistance to fading from sunlight).
Chemical Resistance (ASTM F925): Rated as no effect (No surface swelling, dulling, or softening when exposed to reagents including common acids, alkalis, and sanitizers).
Maintenance Protocols for High-Stain Areas
To preserve the integrity of the protective UV layer in demanding environments, we recommend the following protocols:
Implement entrance mats at all exterior doors to trap abrasive dirt that could wear down the UV coating over time.
Utilize a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for resilient flooring. Avoid harsh abrasive scrubbing pads.
Address spills of strong pigments, such as hair dyes or permanent markers, immediately. While the floor resists penetration, prolonged exposure can make removal more difficult.
