5mm SPC Flooring Wholesale Guide: Specifications, Pricing and Container Quantity

5mm SPC Wholesale Takeaways for Importers
  • Define the Full Construction: Confirm whether “5mm” means a 5mm rigid plank without backing or a combined construction such as 4mm SPC plus 1mm IXPE. These products should not be treated as equivalent.

  • Normalize Supplier Quotations: Compare core thickness, wear layer, backing, click system, surface, plank size, packaging, documents, MOQ, and Incoterm before comparing the price per square meter.

  • Calculate Loading from Verified Weight: Estimate 20GP quantity from the confirmed carton gross weight, square meters per carton, pallet plan, container equipment, and route-specific weight restrictions—not from a generic square-meter promise.

  • Approve a Production Reference: Confirm color, gloss, embossing, bevel, locking profile, backing, carton artwork, and labels against an identified control sample before authorizing mass production.

A quotation marked “5mm SPC” looks straightforward until two samples arrive and they are not built the same way. One may be a full 5mm rigid plank. The other may be a 4mm plank laminated to 1mm IXPE. Both can be sold under the same headline thickness, yet they differ in core thickness, feel, carton weight and cost.

This is where many wholesale comparisons go wrong. The buyer lines up three prices per square meter, but the wear layer, backing, click profile, finish and packing are not actually equivalent.

The practical way to buy 5mm SPC is to define the construction first, price the same specification across suppliers, and calculate container loading from the finished carton—not from a standard figure copied from an old quotation. The sections below follow that order.

What Does 5mm SPC Flooring Mean?

There is no single industry shorthand that every factory uses in exactly the same way. On an RFQ, write the rigid-core thickness and attached-backing thickness as separate lines. That removes the ambiguity immediately.

Four descriptions appear regularly in supplier quotations:

  • 5.0mm SPC without attached backing: the nominal plank construction is approximately 5mm before any separate underlayment.
  • 4.0mm SPC + 1.0mm IXPE: the rigid plank and attached backing together are marketed as a 5mm total construction.
  • 4.0mm SPC + 1.0mm EVA: another 5mm combined construction, but the backing characteristics and quotation may differ.
  • 5.0mm SPC + attached backing: the total installed product may be thicker than 5mm and should not be compared directly with a 4+1mm construction.

Keep the wear layer on its own specification line as well. “5mm” tells you almost nothing about the surface package, and it does not establish a residential or commercial use class by itself.

For a broader explanation of rigid-core construction, see the SPC flooring technical guide.

Recommended 5mm SPC Wholesale Specification Matrix

Configuration Typical positioning Points to confirm
5mm plank, no attached backing, 0.3mm wear layer Residential distribution and projects using an approved separate underlayment Underlayment compatibility, locking profile, total installed height and local requirements
4mm SPC + 1mm IXPE, 0.3mm wear layer Mainstream residential, apartment, renovation and distributor programs IXPE density, compression behavior, acoustic test assembly and whether extra underlayment is prohibited
4mm SPC + 1mm IXPE, 0.5mm wear layer Higher-traffic residential and selected commercial programs Complete-product classification, indentation, rolling-load, stain and maintenance requirements
5mm plank with premium surface and no backing Markets prioritizing a more substantial plank or a separate acoustic system Actual core thickness, weight per square meter, project underlayment and container payload
5mm premium EIR or deep-embossed construction Private-label and higher-value retail collections Film-to-emboss alignment, bevel type, gloss, repeat pattern, board size and approval tolerance

These are sourcing examples rather than fixed product grades. The right version depends on where the floor will be sold, how it will be installed and which claims the importer intends to make.

Which Wear Layer Should Be Used with 5mm SPC?

Thickness and wear layer are often discussed together, but they answer different questions. Plank construction affects the profile, installed height and handling. The wear layer and coating package deal with the surface that people walk on, clean and occasionally abuse.

0.3mm wear layer

For many residential ranges, 0.3mm is the starting point. It can work well for apartments, renovation channels and general retail, provided the rest of the product and the proposed warranty match that position.

Before putting it into a collection, check:

  • Declared wear-layer tolerance
  • UV coating specification
  • Stain and chemical resistance
  • Product classification and applicable tests
  • Warranty scope and exclusions

0.5mm wear layer

A 0.5mm option is often requested when the range is aimed at heavier residential traffic or selected commercial work. It is a useful specification upgrade, not a shortcut to a commercial approval.

For a project order, the conversation usually moves beyond wear layer to indentation, castor-chair use, rolling loads, slip performance, dimensional stability, fire behavior and emissions. The required evidence depends on the destination and the project brief.

Other wear-layer options

Thinner and heavier surface constructions are available, but they need a clear reason for being in the range. Compare test documents to the ordered construction; a familiar wear-layer number on its own is not enough.

See the SPC flooring wear-layer guide for a fuller comparison.

IXPE, EVA or No Attached Backing?

Backing is not a minor add-on. It changes the quote, carton height, gross weight and installation instructions. It also gives the sales team a useful feature to discuss, although the words “IXPE” or “EVA” alone do not prove an acoustic rating.

IXPE backing

IXPE is a familiar choice for private-label SPC ranges. In a purchase specification, state its thickness, density, color and alignment tolerance. If acoustic performance will be advertised, make sure the tested assembly includes the same backing and flooring construction.

EVA backing

EVA can suit a price-led program, depending on the construction offered by the factory. Compare the actual backing sheet and performance data rather than treating every EVA option as identical.

No attached backing

No-backing planks still have a place. Some distributors sell underlayment separately; some projects specify a complete acoustic system; and some markets simply want the lower factory price.

The important detail is compatibility. A soft, unapproved layer beneath a click floor can allow too much vertical movement at the joints. Installation instructions need to say which underlayments are permitted.

For a technical comparison, see IXPE vs EVA underlayment for SPC flooring.

Standard Details to Include in a 5mm SPC RFQ

A factory cannot quote the same product you have in mind unless the RFQ makes that product visible on paper. Thickness and color are only the beginning. A workable RFQ includes the following fields.

RFQ item Example of the required detail
Total construction 4.0mm SPC + 1.0mm IXPE, with stated tolerance
Wear layer 0.3mm or 0.5mm, with stated tolerance
Plank dimensions Length × width in millimeters
Core Formulation control, density range if relevant and recycled-content declaration
Surface Regular embossed, EIR, registered texture, matte or other approved finish
Bevel Square edge, micro bevel, painted bevel or pressed bevel
Click system Profile name, license status where applicable and joint-strength information
Backing IXPE/EVA material, thickness, density, color and tolerance
UV coating Coating system and applicable surface test information
Carton packing Pieces, square meters, net weight and gross weight per carton
Pallet packing Cartons per pallet, pallet size, gross weight and stacking method

Private label Carton artwork, labels, barcode, insert, logo and pallet marks
Order structure Total quantity, quantity per design and permitted production overage

How Is 5mm SPC Flooring Priced?

There is no meaningful “5mm SPC price” without a specification beside it. Even small changes can move the square-meter price, especially when they affect material use, setup time or the quantity produced per design.

Typical price drivers include:

  • SPC core thickness and formulation
  • Wear-layer thickness
  • Decorative film and design exclusivity
  • UV coating and surface treatment
  • EIR registration requirements
  • Bevel construction
  • Click profile and applicable licensing cost
  • Attached IXPE or EVA backing
  • Plank dimensions
  • Order quantity per color
  • Carton and private-label packaging
  • Testing and certification requirements
  • Inspection requirements
  • Payment and delivery terms

Why a low price may not be an equivalent price

The cheapest line on a comparison sheet is sometimes a genuinely competitive offer. Sometimes it is simply a different product: less rigid core, lighter backing, a basic carton or a higher minimum per color. Ask the supplier to fill the gaps instead of guessing why the number is lower.

A side-by-side sheet such as the one below usually settles the comparison quickly.

Price-normalization item Supplier A Supplier B Supplier C

Ex-factory price is not landed cost

The factory price is useful for negotiating production, but margin is made or lost on the delivered order. Build the costing sheet through to the warehouse.

Landed cost per m² =
product value
+ export packing
+ inland transport and origin charges
+ documentation and inspection
+ ocean freight and insurance
+ import duty and tax
+ destination port charges
+ customs clearance
+ inland delivery
+ financing and inventory cost
+ expected claim or replacement allowance

Freight, duty and port charges vary by route and date, so a fixed “global landed price” is rarely useful. Recalculate when the booking window or destination changes.

For additional pricing factors, see the SPC flooring cost and pricing guide.

How to Estimate 20GP Container Quantity

With SPC, a 20-foot container is usually a weight exercise before it is a space exercise. A loading plan that looks comfortable in cubic meters may already be too heavy.

Do not start with a promised number of square meters. Start with the gross weight of the production carton. Then confirm the actual container, carrier booking conditions and road limits at both ends. Pallets, dunnage and securing material count toward the load too.

Basic weight calculation

Gross weight per m² = gross carton weight ÷ m² per carton

Maximum theoretical flooring quantity =
available cargo weight ÷ gross weight per m²

That division gives a ceiling, not a loading instruction. Round it down to full cartons, then allow for pallets, design splits, weight distribution and the operational limit accepted for the route.

Illustrative carton example

Here is a worked example using invented packing data. It shows the method; it is not a loading commitment for an actual order.

Example input Value
Plank size 1220 × 180mm
Pieces per carton 10
Coverage per plank 0.2196m²
Coverage per carton 2.196m²
Illustrative gross carton weight 22.0kg
Calculated gross weight per m² Approximately 10.02kg/m²

If a confirmed loading plan allowed 1,080 cartons after accounting for pallets, weight distribution and the selected stacking arrangement:

1,080 cartons × 2.196m² = 2,371.68m²

1,080 cartons × 22.0kg = 23,760kg carton gross weight

The calculation is still incomplete until pallet and dunnage weight are added. The verified gross mass must fit the equipment, carrier and inland transport limits.

If the wear layer, backing, board size or packing changes, run the calculation again. A container quantity belongs to one product-and-packing combination; it should not be reused as a universal 5mm SPC figure.

Floor-loaded or palletized?

Floor loading may use container space efficiently, but unloading is more labor-intensive and edge protection must be carefully planned.

Palletized loading can improve warehouse handling and batch separation, but pallets add weight and may reduce the number of cartons that fit the loading pattern.

The buyer should confirm:

  • Whether pallets are required
  • Permitted pallet material and treatment
  • Maximum pallet weight
  • Forklift and unloading conditions
  • Carton orientation
  • Anti-collapse and moisture-protection methods
  • Color and batch separation
  • Destination road-weight restrictions

See the SPC container loading and ocean freight guide for additional packaging and damage-prevention considerations.

MOQ and Color Planning for Wholesale Orders

“One container, mixed colors” does not necessarily mean any mix is possible. The factory may apply one minimum to the construction and another to each decorative film or color. Clarify both before selecting the launch range.

Before confirming the order, ask:

  • Minimum total order quantity
  • Minimum square meters per color
  • Number of colors permitted in one container
  • Production overage or shortage tolerance
  • Whether matching film is in stock
  • Lead time for custom film or private-label cartons
  • Reorder minimum and batch-matching policy
  • Whether accessories can be loaded in the same container

Launching too many low-volume colors creates two problems at once: awkward production quantities at the factory and slow stock at the distributor. A tighter opening palette is usually easier to replenish. Add the less obvious designs after real sales data is available.

For order planning, see the SPC flooring MOQ guide.

Sample Approval Before Mass Production

A sample is useful only when both sides know what it controls. Give it an identification number, link it to the purchase order and record the points approved against it:

  • Decor color and permitted visual range
  • Surface embossing and registration
  • Gloss level
  • Bevel color and dimensions
  • Plank size and squareness
  • Total thickness, wear layer and backing
  • Click engagement
  • Backing alignment and adhesion
  • Carton artwork and labels
  • Barcode and product identification
  • Installation instructions and warranty text

A loose showroom board is not a production standard. Without identification and written approval, it may represent a different film batch, bevel, backing or even a different construction.

Use the SPC sample approval checklist before authorizing production.

Quality Control for 5mm SPC Flooring

Inspection is most useful when it follows the approved specification rather than a generic checklist. Focus first on the points that can stop the product from being sold or installed.

Incoming and production controls

  • Raw-material and formulation controls
  • Core thickness and dimensional tolerance
  • Wear-layer and film identification
  • Color, gloss and embossing approval
  • Click-profile tooling and fit
  • Backing thickness, density and alignment
  • Plank dimensions, squareness and straightness

Pre-shipment controls

  • Random carton and plank measurements
  • Visual defect classification
  • Click assembly checks
  • Carton quantity and square-meter verification
  • Net and gross weight checks
  • Label and barcode verification
  • Pallet stability and edge protection
  • Container condition and loading photographs
  • Batch and color allocation

Match test documents to the destination, the project and the claims printed on the packaging. A report for another thickness or backing may be helpful background, but it is not automatically evidence for the order being shipped.

See the SPC flooring quality inspection checklist for a complete factory and pre-shipment framework.

Common 5mm SPC Sourcing Mistakes

  1. Comparing only total thickness: A 4+1mm construction is not automatically equivalent to a 5mm plank without backing.
  2. Ignoring wear-layer tolerance: The nominal value should be connected to a written specification and inspection method.
  3. Assuming IXPE means a guaranteed acoustic rating: Acoustic values belong to the tested assembly, not only to the backing name.
  4. Using an estimated container quantity as a sales promise: Final loading depends on carton weight, pallets, equipment and route limits.
  5. Choosing too many colors below the practical MOQ: This can increase production risk and slow-moving inventory.
  6. Approving color but not construction: The control sample must include thickness, backing, click profile, surface and bevel.
  7. Buying on FOB price alone: Packaging, loading efficiency, claims, duties and destination handling affect landed cost.
  8. Using generic test reports: Confirm that documents apply to the ordered product construction.

Frequently Asked Questions About SPC Flooring UV Coating & Stain Resistance

How does UV coating create stain resistance on SPC flooring surfaces? +
The factory-applied polyurethane (PUR) UV topcoat undergoes intense ultraviolet light curing, creating a highly cross-linked, non-porous polymer barrier. This dense surface seal prevents liquid staining agents—such as coffee, red wine, mustard, ink, and oils—from penetrating into the clear wear layer or microscopic surface fissures.
What standard laboratory tests evaluate SPC flooring chemical and stain resistance? +
Stain and chemical resistance are quantified under ASTM F925 (North America) and EN 423 / ISO 26987 (Europe). The protocols expose the coated surface to common household reagents, acids, alkalis, and staining chemicals for 24-hour periods, evaluating discoloration, surface swelling, and gloss degradation on a strict pass/fail scale.
How do ceramic beads or aluminum oxide particles improve UV coating durability? +
Infusing microscopic ceramic beads or aluminum oxide particles into the UV formulation creates a tough, micro-textured barrier on top of the wear layer. This microscopic reinforcement deflects abrasive foot traffic and sliding debris, dramatically slowing micro-scratch development which can otherwise trap dirt and cause haze over time.
Can improper cleaning chemicals strip or damage the factory UV coating? +
Yes. Highly alkaline floor strippers, bleach, acetone, or abrasive solvent cleaners can chemically etch the cured PUR coating, breaking the cross-linked bonds and causing a dull, vulnerable surface prone to permanent staining. Importers and property managers should mandate pH-neutral cleaners (pH 7.0–8.0) to preserve the protective finish.
